What Happens During a Boiler Installation? From Survey to Handover

Having a boiler replaced involves more than removing one appliance and connecting another. The new boiler needs to suit your home, work with the heating system and be properly checked before it is handed over.

Knowing the stages helps you understand the quotation, prepare for the work and ask useful questions.

At LE Plumbing & Heating Ltd, our boiler installation service covers the supply and fitting of combi, system and conventional boilers in Bognor Regis and across West Sussex. Here is what the process involves.

The survey: choosing a suitable replacement

The process starts with a visit to assess your property and discuss the available boiler types.

Your existing heating arrangement, hot water requirements and available space all inform the recommendation. A compact flat may have different needs from a family home with a hot water cylinder or an older property with a conventional system.

Luke discusses the options and provides a clear written quotation. This is also the time to mention planned changes, such as an additional bathroom or alterations to the heating system.

If your current boiler has developed a fault, replacement should not simply be assumed necessary. Our guide to the signs you need boiler repairs explains symptoms that warrant an assessment.

Agreeing the scope and timescale

Before installation, you should understand which work is included and how long it is expected to take.

A straightforward replacement in the same location may typically fit into a day. More complex changes, including pipework alterations or system upgrades, can take longer. The survey provides a more realistic estimate for your property.

The quotation should reflect the proposed installation, including any necessary work to pipework, radiators, the flue or controls.

Ask when heating and hot water will be unavailable so you can plan around the interruption.

Removing the old boiler

The existing appliance is disconnected and removed as part of the replacement.

Our installation service includes removal and responsible disposal of the old boiler. Access should be discussed beforehand, especially if the appliance is in a tight cupboard or another awkward position.

If the replacement is moving to a different location, the associated connections and installation route need to be planned as part of the job.

Fitting the new boiler and updating connections

The chosen boiler is installed with the associated pipework updates and any necessary radiator or flue work.

The installation needs to suit the property and the requirements of the selected appliance. Existing connections cannot automatically be assumed suitable simply because a boiler was previously fitted there.

This is also why known heating faults should be discussed before work begins. For example, a leak elsewhere in the heating circuit may continue after the boiler is replaced. Our article on why a boiler keeps losing pressure explains why the cause needs investigating.

Commissioning: checking the installation

Once fitted, the boiler needs commissioning before normal use.

This stage includes the relevant safety and system checks, pressure testing and controls setup. It establishes that the installation operates as intended rather than relying on the fact that the boiler switches on.

Our service includes full commissioning and a check of the heating system before handover.

Understanding the controls and paperwork

The final stage should leave you confident using your new boiler.

We demonstrate the system, explain the controls and provide the relevant documentation and manufacturer details. Manufacturer paperwork is registered where applicable.

If controls are being changed, ask how to adjust the heating schedule and temperatures. Our thermostat and controls installation service is also relevant when reviewing how you manage the heating.

Keep the installation documents and warranty information somewhere accessible. Check any servicing conditions attached to the manufacturer’s warranty so you understand the ongoing requirements.
